The Future Has Come to Collect My Kid

a mom’s marvel at moments and memories in the making

Mothering a high school senior

is a restless wrestle of

reminiscence and release.

Multitudes of past and present

timelines thread through my thoughts,

and galaxies of gratitude grace my days.

Moments, memories, and marvels, oh my.

From board books to college essays,

the years fluttered through

like a hummingbird's flight,

iridescently beautiful and stunningly fast.

Be still, my parenting heart.

Preparations for next steps spark

dreams of wands that can slow

or stop time… just for a minute.

Still, I recognize the good fortune

to celebrate and witness

the whirlwind of wonder

that is distinctly theirs in the making.

As they unravel childhood

and assemble adulthood,

I sometimes miss their littleness

as I gladly greet their adultness.

The duality is daunting and delightful.

As joy and grief compose new chapters,

heartfelt cheers and tears are ever-present.

I lovingly let go and embrace this

era of exquisite surrender

It is time to grow with the flow.

The last of the last

high school events

keep coming and going.

The celebratory notes of

traditions, triumphs, and transitions

grow louder and I know,

that the future has come to collect my kid.

Love, excitement and confidence abound,

as I behold this young adult at the helm

of graduation and growth!

My kid has gone to welcome their future!
